Chapter Twenty-Nine

There are four doorbells, none of which has a name beside it. I pick the top one and press hard.

“Who’s there?” A voice sounds from a small intercom, and Michaela and I both jump.

“Uh, my name’s Gabriella Deveaux, and I’m looking for Marie Françoise.”

There’s a long silence. “What d’y want with Marie?”

My heart skips a beat. Whoever this is knows the psychic. Maybe she is Marie.

“I’m…the granddaughter of an old friend of hers, Ariella Deveaux. I’m in New Orleans for the day, and I thought I’d stop by and say hello.”

There comes a low grunt from the speaker, then, “Marie’s not here.”

“Do you know where I can find her?”

“She doesn’t want to be found.”

It isn’t the answer I’m expecting. Nor one I want to hear. “Why not?”

“Go away,” the voice says.

“Please, wait…” But there’s no reply. “How rude,” I mutter. But I can’t give up. This person knows where to find Marie Françoise.

And Marie Françoise apparently holds the answers I desperately need. I poise my finger over the bell again, press it, and don’t let up.
